SUPER BOWL XXI : NOTEBOOK : Sweet Dream Turns Sour for Broncos’ Johnson; For Giants’ Morris, Victory Means Vindication

Denver wide receiver Vance Johnson realized one of his dreams Sunday when he caught a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

But Johnson didn’t particularly like the circumstances in which he scored. It came late in the fourth quarter after the Giants had a comfortable lead. In other words, it didn’t mean much, even to Johnson.

“There was no reason for me to celebrate,” Johnson said. “After I made that touchdown, I started crying in the end zone. I felt bad. I said to myself, ‘So what?’ I was just glad to get in the end zone and lower the point spread a little bit. That’s all.

“This is not something Vance Johnson will remember pleasantly.”

All in all, though, Super Bowl week was enjoyable for Johnson, who relishes the attention he has received for his pass catching, verbalization and artistic skills.

“This whole week was great,” Johnson said. “It was fun, but I must say that it was a lot funner earlier in the week than today.

“There is no doubt in my mind that (the Giants) are the best team in the league today. Maybe on another day, like tomorrow, we could beat them or some other team could beat them. But they played the Super Bowl today, not tomorrow. Too bad for us.”
