New Year’s Fireworks Leave 15 Dead in China

Explosions at fireworks factories preparing for celebrations of the lunar New Year’s holiday killed at least 15 people and caused heavy property damage, China Daily newspaper said Wednesday.

The paper said the explosions occurred in an illegal factory in Hebei province, and at a fireworks plant in the city of Nanning shortly before the holiday began last Thursday.

The setting off of fireworks traditionally reaches a climax at midnight on the eve of the new year, when cities are rocked by the deafening roar of fireworks launched on every block.
