Rain Washes Out Saturday Events

The Northridge/Alemany invitational track meet and six high school baseball and softball games involving Valley-area teams were postponed or canceled Saturday because of rain.

In addition, a nonconference softball doubleheader between Cal State Northridge and Cal State Sacramento scheduled for Saturday at CSUN was canceled and will not be rescheduled, CSUN Coach Gary Torgeson said. The Lady Matadors will play Sacramento in the CSUN tournament April 14 and again in the Sacramento tournament April 30.

The Northridge/Alemany invitational, which was washed out after only two varsity events, will be completed at Cal State Northridge on April 4.

Seventy-five schools were scheduled to participate Saturday, but Alemany Coach Randy Smith said he is unsure how many will show up April 4 because of prior commitments.

The results of the boys and girls four-mile relays, the only events run Saturday, will stand, Smith said.

Thousand Oaks won the boys relay in 18:35.1. The Lancers were followed by Arcadia (18:38.0), Buena (18:41.4), Santa Monica (19:03.0), Palos Verdes (19.04.0), Duarte (19:10.4) and Burroughs (19:17.0). Thousand Oaks also won the girls relay in 22:15.0, beating second-place Wilson by four seconds.

Royal and Alemany had second-round baseball games in the Palos Verdes tournament rained out.

Alemany’s game against Gardena has been rescheduled for Wednesday at Gardena at 3 p.m. But Royal Coach Mike McCurdy is unsure whether his team will be able to make up its game against University.

The third round begins Saturday, and Monday is the only open day this week for both teams. University has a league game Tuesday, however, and is unwilling to play Monday, McCurdy said.

“This could put the whole tournament on hold,” McCurdy said.

Notre Dame’s nonleague game against Venice will not be rescheduled. Notre Dame received a bye in the second round of the Palos Verdes tournament after beating Venice in the first round last Saturday, and Notre Dame Coach Bob Mandeville said he had scheduled a second game against Venice only to fill the open date.

Crespi’s nonleague game against Grant will be played April 4 at Grant at 11 a.m. A softball game between Saugus and Torrance in the Hawthorne tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hawthorne.

La Reina’s softball game against Hoover was postponed, but La Reina Coach Don Hyatt said he will not know until Monday when the game will be played.
