The Los Angeles Times received City Council approval to construct a major new printing plant in the industrial section of downtown Los Angeles. The 26-acre plant, which will replace printing facilities now housed at Times Mirror Square, will also include warehouse, garage, transportation and mailroom facilities. In making its decision, the council granted revocable permission to The Times to close and build over these public streets and alleys: Wilson Street, from Hunter Street to the Santa Monica Freeway at Olympic Boulevard; Hunter from Lawrence Street to Lemon Street; Lawrence from Hunter to 8th Street; the alley south of 8th from Alameda Avenue to Damon Street, and portions of Damon from 8th to Lemon.
