Older workers will be a key to America’s productivity and competitiveness, Labor Secretary William E. Brock III said at the 37th annual conference of the National Council on Aging in Chicago. “This country is going to be severely short of a number of skilled people in the next five to 13 years,” when the average age of the work force will rise from 35 to 39, Brock said. The Labor Department is awarding a $340,000 grant to the council for a campaign to promote increased use of older workers, he said.
