Duarte : School Spending Freeze

Share

School board members have voted to freeze all expenditures from May 1 to the end of the school year in June because the district has not received as much money as expected from the state.

Assistant Supt. David Kanthak said the district has $300,000 less than it needs to meet expenses because lottery income was $200,000 less than anticipated, the state cut $80,000 from the amount it originally allocated for the district and income based on average daily attendance decreased.

Kanthak said the district will be able to pay its bills and employees’ salaries, but will not be able to purchase new books and supplies for its 4,300 students.

Two weeks ago, the district transferred $150,000 from its Fund for Economic Uncertainties to its general fund to help cover expenses, Kanthak said.
