McEnroe Argues, Then Advances in WCT Finals

John McEnroe had harsh words for fans, officials, photographers and his opponent Wednesday night before defeating Yannick Noah, 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in the $675,000 WCT Finals.

McEnroe was protesting a line call with chair umpire Richard Kaufman in the fourth set when Noah grew impatient and confronted him. The players shouted at one another from the base line, then advanced to the net.

McEnroe, who will meet Sweden’s Stefan Edberg in Friday’s semifinals, became testy with photographers for taking pictures of his wife, Tatum, who was seated front row. McEnroe said: “Stop taking pictures of my wife. I don’t like it and she doesn’t like it either.”

He also had angry words for fans and complained loudly to Kaufman during the third set, asking Kaufman why he had not overruled several close line calls that had gone against him.
