A black woman who said she suffered a disabling anxiety attack because of harassment from co-workers was awarded $3.5 million in a racial discrimination suit in Jacksonville, Fla., against Southern Bell. Mary Ann Vance, 38, who had testified that one supervisor went so far as to place a noose above her desk, was awarded $2.5 million in punitive damages and about $1 million in compensatory damages from an all-white federal jury.
