The city of Manila was cordoned off and security at the presidential palace doubled in the wake of the storming of Philippine army headquarters by a group of mutineers seeking to free soldiers jailed after a Jan. 27 coup attempt. Military Chief of Staff Gen. Fidel V. Ramos said there was no truth to reports that the mutineers were demanding a military takeover of the government. The incident began about 3:45 a.m. Saturday at Fort Bonifacio, in suburban Manila, when the mutineers seized the headquarters building and took about 50 people hostage. The mutineers surrendered about eight hours later after Aquino loyalists surrounded the building.
