Share

Firefighters contained two fires in the Santa Clarita Valley on Saturday, one of them a 45-acre brush fire that caused the evacuation of a recreational shooting range in the Angeles National Forest, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The other fire, which was quickly extinguished, was said to have been started by children in Green Valley.

The larger fire broke out in dry brush about 1 p.m. near Texas Canyon Road, just east of Bouquet Canyon and south of Falls Road in Saugus. It was contained in about four hours, said Forest Service dispatcher Fred Smith. No homes were endangered.

Firefighters asked about 20 persons shooting at targets to leave the Texas Canyon Shooting Range. Authorities were concerned that the fire could close Texas Canyon Road, trapping them there.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Smith said.

Children playing with matches about 4:45 p.m. reportedly set off the Green Valley fire, which briefly threatened several homes. Firefighters put out the blaze within 30 minutes. About half an acre of brush was burned, Smith said.
