Marshall High Whiz Kids Win
John Marshall High School of Los Angeles took top honors today in the 1987 United States Academic Decathlon. Marshall defeated 37 other six-student teams from around the country in a weekend of competition that included an oral “Super Quiz” and written tests in economics, fine arts, language, literature, science, social science and mathematics.
Marshall, an ethnically mixed, Los Feliz-area school, was the first school from outside Texas to win the national competition since 1983. A team from Sugar Land, Tex., placed second, a Tucson team third. Marshall student David Florey was the top individual achiever, correctly answering 89% of his questions.
