On the Line to Run in Kentucky Derby
On the Line, a 6 1/2-length winner in Saturday’s Derby Trial at Churchill Downs, will replace injured Talinum on Wayne Lukas’ three-horse Kentucky Derby team, Jeff Lukas, the trainer’s son and assistant, said Sunday.
“We had no intention of running him in the Derby,” Jeff Lukas said. “But the way he ran yesterday, and the way the Derby is shaping up, we decided why not.”
He was referring to the losses of Temperate Sil and Talinum, who were pulled out Saturday. Temperate Sil has a throat infection and Talinum a lame foreleg. Lukas said Gary Stevens, who was scheduled to ride Talinum, may ride On the Line.
