Favorable trade winds allowed three competitors to pull within 100 miles of pace-setter Titouan Lamazou in the BOC Challenge round-the-world yacht race.
Lamazou, in his 60-foot cutter Ecureuil d’Aquitaine, was 1,674 miles from Newport, R.I., Sunday morning on the fourth and final leg.
But Frenchman Philippe Jeantot was 1,719 miles from Newport and closing fast. Guy Bernardin was 1,764 miles out in Biscuits Lu, followed by Jean Yves Terlain in UAP Pour Medecins Sans Frontieres at 1,773 miles.
