Two men were in custody in Fresno in the death of a woman who was run over by a pickup truck as she tried to retrieve her purse from one of two people in the vehicle. Fresno police said they arrested Nick Bishop, 33, and David Byers, 34, on suspicion of murder in the death of Grace Nava, 62. Witnesses told officers that the woman was pumping gasoline at a self-service station when a man walked by and took her purse from the car seat. They said Nava chased the man until he got into a pickup truck driven by another man. Nava stumbled and fell, and witnesses said the truck ran over her before speeding away. Detectives said Bishop and Byers were arrested after they tried to cash a stolen check at a grocery store. The store owner became suspicious and called police, who stopped the pickup a few minutes later. Detectives said evidence linking the suspects to Nava was recovered.
