A space shuttle crew of five will deal with more malfunctions in a three-day simulated mission starting today than would occur in 10 actual flights, Johnson Space Center officials said in Houston. The simulated mission is preliminary to the planned launching of the shuttle Discovery on the first post-Challenger mission next year, simulation supervisor C. Stokes McMillan said. It is also the first extensive simulation of a shuttle flight since the Challenger exploded Jan. 28, 1986. The astronauts in the simulation will not be the crew on Discovery’s next mission.
