San Gabriel Valley : Waste Pleas Not Guilty
Two companies and four individuals accused of illegally disposing of hazardous waste in San Gabriel Valley landfills have pleaded not guilty to the charges in Los Angeles Municipal Court.
Western Waste Industries of Carson and three of its employees, Hacob (Jake) Shirvanian, Dennis Kautz and Hovsep Shadarevian, and Roehl Corp. of Wilmington and its general manager, Paul DeVries, were arraigned last week and face preliminary hearings Aug. 5. Pretrial motions seeking dismissal of the charges will be heard May 27.
The charges filed by the district attorney’s office accuse Western Waste and its employees of concealing hazardous waste underneath loads of ordinary trash sent to the Puente Hills, BKK and Scholl Canyon landfills. Roehl Corp. and its general manager were accused of disposing of a hazardous dry-cleaning chemical, perchloroethylene, by mixing it with ordinary trash picked up by Western Waste trucks.
