The National School Boards Assn. urged a federal appeals court to block an order banning from public schools 44 textbooks suspected of promoting humanism. A friend-of-the-court brief filed in the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta by the association and the Tennessee School Boards Assn. said that curriculum and textbook decisions are primarily a matter for school boards. U.S. District Judge W. Brevard Hand in March labeled “secular humanism” a religion and ordered the textbooks removed from Alabama public schools because they promote the religion. The Alabama Board of Education is appealing.
