Norwalk : Walkway to Be Guarded

Share

The Norwalk City Council has authorized the hiring of a security guard at the Silverbow Avenue pedestrian walkway over the Santa Ana Freeway. The action is in response to the sexual molesting of a 13-year-old girl who was using the walkway on her way home from school May 15.

The guard will be hired for three weeks, until the end of the semester. Parents told council members to seek a permanent solution to the dangerous situation.

Since the molestation incident, two other children have reported that they had been threatened by strangers on the walkway. Silverbow is used by children going to and from Moffitt School on the north side of the freeway and Norwalk Park on the south.

Councilman Robert E. White initially protested the $400 expenditure, saying, “Not all women work. Why can’t mothers walk their children to school instead of staying home in bed?” However, after members of the audience made angry replies to his comments, White made the motion for the expenditure, and it passed unanimously.
