Reversing an earlier decision, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega told a news conference in Panama City that he will attend an Aug. 6-7 summit of Central American leaders in Guatemala to discuss a peace plan for the war-torn region. Ortega said last week that he would not attend the summit, which originally was scheduled for June 25-26 but was postponed by Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte. Ortega contended that the United States pressured Duarte to back out. In Washington, the State Department said it welcomes Ortega’s decision to attend.
