Van Doren Rubber Co. Inc., the Orange-based manufacturer of canvas shoes, said it won an out-of-court settlement for trademark violation from The Stride Rite Corp., one of the nation’s largest sellers of footwear.

Stride Rite was selling shoes with soles that had a distinctive, waffle pattern Van Doren had registered as a trademark. Van Doren markets shoes in 53 retail stores under the names and “Vans” and “Off the Wall.”

Privately owned Van Doren had been using the design since about 1966, said Darrell L. Olson, a lawyer for the company. “When people see the design, they think Van’s,” Olson said. “As soon as we learned, we immediately put them on notice.”

Olson said that Stride Rite alleged that the violation was in advertent. Arthur Kramer, associate counsel for Stride Rite, declined comment.

The amount of the settlement was not disclosed. Van Doren officials said a large chunk of the funds would be donated to a half-dozen charities.

Stride Rite, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company based in Cambridge, Mass., has annual sales of about $300 million and markets shoes in more than 200 stores under the brands of “Stride Rite,” “Keds,” “Zips,” and “Sperry Top-Sider.”
