Evans Says He Is Close to Signing

Donald Evans, the Rams’ second-round draft choice, said Friday night he is close to signing a contract with the team.

“We’re hoping to get everything straightened out tomorrow (today),” Evans said from his home in Raleigh, N.C. “We just have a couple little things to take care of.”

Evans said he hoped to join the team in time for its Sunday night flight to London. The Rams are playing an exhibition game against the Denver Broncos in England on Aug. 9.

Steve Weinberg, Evans’ agent, is in Los Angeles negotiating with Rams general counsel Jay Zygmunt.

Evans, a defensive end from Winston-Salem State, has missed two full weeks of training camp but said he is in shape and has been studying his playbook.
