Three Sri Lankans were killed Friday when Indian soldiers and Sri Lankan police dispersed Sinhalese and Tamils who clashed in the eastern town of Trincomalee, military officials said. About 15 people were wounded in the incident and an indefinite curfew was clamped on the town to quell communal violence.

Military officials said two Sinhalese and a Tamil died when joint patrols from the Sri Lankan police and Indian soldiers tried to disperse 200 to 300 people who were pelting each other with stones.

About 8,000 Indian troops were sent to the northern and eastern provinces to enforce a July 29 peace accord.
