Providenzia Caito, who celebrated her 80th wedding anniversary last January, setting a marriage record for California, died Sunday at Granada Hills Community Hospital. She was 97.

Her husband, Salvatore, now 105, was 24 and his bride 16 when the marriage was arranged by their parents in their native Sicily. He brought her to this country shortly afterward and they settled in New York, where he was a grocer.

Caito retired to the San Fernando Valley in 1948 with his wife, and their four daughters and son soon followed. In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. Caito is survived by five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At the time their California marital longevity record was announced in January, only one other American couple, Oliver and Cora Glenn of Elmore, Ala., had been married longer--82 years.
