The largest flawless diamond ever to be auctioned was sold at Christie’s gallery Wednesday for $6.38 million, topping by almost $1.3 million the previous world auction record for a diamond, officials said.

The pear-shaped, unset 64.8-carat gem was rated “D, flawless” on the gemology scale of clarity, which runs from D, the best, to Z, the worst. It was consigned to sale by an anonymous owner and sold to a unidentified buyer.

The stone was the sixth-largest pear-shaped diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America and was considered tops in color, quality and proportions.

The previous world auction record for any diamond, $5.1 million, was set by the famous Polar Star, a 41.28-carat stone sold in 1980 to a jeweler.
