Protesters Interrupt Governor’s Speech
Two members of Greenpeace, protesting the preliminary approval of a hazardous waste incineration plant in Vernon, attempted to disrupt a speech by Gov. George Deukmejian in Los Angeles Friday and were quickly escorted from the meeting by state police.
Deukmejian was appearing at a waste management conference when the two protesters began shouting. They were taken from the meeting and released.
Earlier, Greenpeace held a press conference to condemn plans to build the Vernon plant without a formal environmental impact report.
The plant would burn waste oil, solvents and organic sludges. No environmental impact report is being required because the South Coast Air Quality Management District ruled that the risk of the plant causing cancer is less than 1 case in a million people over a 70-year period, said Alex Cunningham, chief deputy director of the state toxic substances control division.
