Local News in Brief : Condo Relocation Plan
Dozens of angry condominium residents who are being told that they must vacate their crumbling homes in the long-troubled Monterey Hills redevelopment area will meet this weekend with city Community Redevelopment Agency officials to make final plans for their relocation.
As many as 80 residents of a 36-unit building in the Huntington Terrace portion of the housing complex were told this week that their structure was no longer safe because of shifting earth beneath it. The redevelopment-sponsored complex is built on landfill as deep as 150 feet.
“It’s scary . . . and we are angry,” said Bill Baird, president of the Huntington Terrace Homeowners Assn. “But the practical problem from our perspective now is we have to be out as soon as possible.”
Redevelopment officials say the building can be repaired and the agency has offered to make the repairs and pay for relocating residents in the interim.
