Local News in Brief : Burbank Airport Plans

Burbank Airport administrators have disclosed plans for a new terminal capable of handling about twice the current number of flights and passengers.

The plans are outlined in the draft version of an environmental impact report released by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

Airport administrators have been under conflicting pressures from the Federal Aviation Administration--which has ruled that the present 50-year-old terminal must be replaced to meet modern safety standards--and to satisfy homeowners in the east San Fernando Valley, who complain about aircraft noise and want the airport scaled down or closed.

The terminal, scheduled for completion in the 1990s, would be able to handle 92,270 takeoffs and landings a year--contrast with last year’s 50,827--and 7.3 million passengers annually, contrasted with last year’s total of 3 million.
