Orange County College Roundup : Upsets Mark Irvine Tennis Tournament

Two of the top 10 seeded players were upset in the third round of the Rolex-ITCA (International Tennis Coaches’ Assn.) Southern California women’s tennis championships at UC Irvine Friday.

Kirsten Dryer of UCLA, seeded sixth, was defeated by Janna Kovacavich of Pepperdine, 6-0, 6-2. Susan Russo of Arizona, seeded eighth, lost to Mary Norwood of USC, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Ginger Helgeses, the second-seeded player, won two matches Friday, as did third-seeded Tricia Laux and seventh-seeded Stephanie London, both of USC.

London defeated Haruko Shigekawa of UC Irvine, 6-1, 6-3.

Quarterfinal play begins today at 9 a.m., and semifinals are at 11. The singles final is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday.

In men’s tennis:

Chapman’s Miles Walker defeated teammate Olivier Amerlinck, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, in the final of the Rolex-ITCA Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at Chapman Friday.

The final was originally to be played at Claremont-Mudd Oct. 11, but was rained out.

The victory qualifies Walker to play in the Rolex-ITCA Small College Nationals on Feb. 3-4 at the University of Minnesota.

In women’s nonconference cross-country:

Pepperdine 27, Chapman 29--Carla Figueroa of Chapman won the three-mile race in 17:37, breaking her own course record of 18:30 set last year.

Kim Hughes finished second in 18:23 to lead Pepperdine.

In men’s nonconference cross-country:

Pepperdine 27, Christ College Irvine 37, Chapman 58--Dale Reichender set a course record of 26:39 for five miles to lead Pepperdine at Orange. Reichender broke the record of 27:17 set by Chapman’s Ray Campbell last year.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. volleyball:

San Jose State 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Susan Herman led the Titans (9-15, 1-11) with 20 kills; sophomore middle blocker Tammy Miller added 14 and freshman Ann Witkowski had 12 in a losing effort at Fullerton.

In nonconference volleyball:

Pacific Christian College 3, West Coast Christian 0--Leeann Blanton had eight kills and Kris Codson had seven to lead the Deacons to a 15-1, 15-3, 15-6, victory at Fresno.

PCC is 11-5. In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, UC Irvine 0--Darci Pankard had eight straight service aces in the first game as the Mustangs (13-8, 5-6) defeated the Anteaters, 15-6, 15-5, 16-14, at San Luis Obispo. Kris Roberts led Irvine (7-9, 2-7) with eight kills.
