Bishop Amat High School left little doubt which is the best team in the Angelus League Friday night, scoring a convincing 34-0 victory over Servite in front of a homecoming crowd of 5,500 in Kiefer Stadium at La Puente.

The win was the Lancers’ 28th straight in regular-season play and their seventh straight this year. Bishop Amat hasn’t lost on its home field since the ninth week of the 1984 season.

Bishop Amat scored in every quarter as quarterback J.R. Phillips passed for 156 yards and tailback Mazio Royster gained 114 yards in the lopsided win. The Lancers have beaten Servite three straight seasons, totalling 109 points in the three games.

Royster scored three touchdowns on runs of 9, 28 and 54 yards. His shortest scoring run was his most impressive as he broke a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, raced around left end and then leaped over a tackler at the goal line to land in the end zone.

Phillips got the Lancers off to a quick start, throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Wade Kennedy on the Lancers’ first possession. Bishop Amat went on to a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Quarterback Jason Frank was the Friars’ offense in the first half. He completed 17 of 27 passes for 154 yards in the half, but the Friars’ only scoring opportunity failed when Pat Blottiaux’ 51-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

Frank managed only 17 yards passing in the second half and finished the night completing 21 of 36 passes for 171 yards. Wide receiver Jason Rees caught 7 passes for 108 yards in a losing cause.

Servite’s traditionally strong defense was shredded for the second straight week. Last week, St. Paul scored 31 points against the Friars, but Bishop Amat topped the figure by three points as the Friars (4-2-1, 0-2) are still looking for their first league win.

Servite’s ground game wasn’t much better. Bishop Amat’s scrappy defense, led by end Art Chavolla, held the Friar starting running backs to just two yards rushing and sacked Frank six times.
