Indian Troops Find Tamil ‘Air Force’ in Sri Lanka Factory
Indian soldiers found a glider and a one-seat airplane made by Tamil guerrillas in an abandoned building that rebels passed off as a knitting factory in northern Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan journalists were shown the factory Friday by Indian officers when they flew to the rebel stronghold, captured by the Indian peacekeeping force last month.
The factory, located in a densely populated area near Jaffna University, had a sign outside that read “Chandra Knitting Factory.”
The plane, powered by motorcycle engines, was made of aluminium. A Sri Lankan military official said the rebels might have planned to use the aircraft to bomb military targets.
