Community College Roundup : Cerritos Edges Cypress to Win Golden West Final

Chris Naulls hit a 15-foot shot with 25 seconds remaining as Cerritos College defeated Cypress, 64-62, to win the Golden West Invitational basketball tournament Saturday. Cypress (9-2) overcame a 13-point deficit with a 20-7 run midway through the second half.

Cypress pulled even, 54-54, with 5:35 to play. The Chargers’ Kris Brodowski scored 10 points during the stretch, including four consecutive baskets.

After Naulls put the Falcons (6-4) ahead, the Chargers had a chance to tie, but Jeff Green’s desperation shot fell short as time ran out.

Green led all scorers with 22 points. Brodowski had 18. David Porter led the Falcons with 16.

In another Golden West Tournament game:

Compton 85, Golden West 71--

Vincent Camper scored 25 points as the Tarters finished third. Compton (7-3) opened the second half with a 22-4 run. Golden West (6-4) was led by Dan Westmoreland with 13 points and Markus Muller-Stach with 12 points. The Rustlers overcame a 13-point deficit in the first half, but cold shooting (37%) and turnovers allowed Compton to pull away in the second. Compton also had 18 points from Gregory Armstrong.

In the Santa Barbara City Tournament:

Saddleback 59, College of the Sequoias 44--Guard Joe Hudson scored 15 points, including two three-pointers, and center John Waikle had 14 points to lead Saddleback (6-5) to the consolation championship. College of the Sequoias (8-5) turned the ball over four times in the first four minutes of the second half, giving Saddleback a six-point lead that it maintained.

In the San Jose Tournament:

Skyline 64, Orange Coast 53--OCC trailed by just one point, 25-24, at halftime but shot just 19 of 53 from the floor and 13 of 22 from the line in the second half to finish fourth in the tournament. Forward Dave Miles led OCC with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

In a nonconference game:

Rancho Santiago 111, Chaffey 87--Rancho Santiago improved its record to 9-2 at home, paced by Alonzo Jamison’s 23 points. Kenny Ammann scored 23, and Tony Smalley added 22 points. Though Rancho Santiago trailed, 46-44, at halftime, Jamison had 17 points in the second half. Ammann hit three of five three-point attempts. Chaffey is 4-6.
