Japan will proceed with scaled-down plans to kill 300 minke whales this year under the category of scientific whaling, its Fisheries Agency said. Japan agreed last year to comply with a moratorium on commercial whaling called by the International Whaling Commission. It officially ended commercial hunting for minke and sperm whales in international waters in September, and it is to stop commercial hunting of sperm whales in March. But Japan announced in April that it would kill 875 whales in Antarctic waters this year for research purposes, which is permitted under the 42-nation whaling commission’s treaty.
