Fullerton : Lighter-Than-Air Mail Leads to School Ties
Thanks to “air mail” launched on a helium-filled balloon, children in a Fullerton elementary school are now corresponding with students in a school in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Students at Orangethorpe School in Fullerton sent a “peace balloon” aloft on Sept. 16, the International Day of Peace. The balloon was in the likeness of a globe and an attached envelope contained students’ letters urging peace on earth.
About a month later, the balloon and its envelope were found in a tree by Nelson Glass, a roofing worker from Big Bear City. Glass presented the balloon to his daughter Christine’s fifth grade class at Big Bear Elementary, and that class started writing letters to the Fullerton students.
Fourteen students from Big Bear Elementary have so far written to their Orangethorpe counterparts, Fullerton School District said this week. The district noted that the children’s letters at both schools are filled with hopes for peace.
