A 20-year-old man died Monday after the car he was riding in struck an abandoned vehicle on Old Highway 395 near Rancho California, authorities said. The victim was not immediately identified.

The driver, James Morgan, 28, of Fallbrook, received minor injuries in the accident and was treated at Fallbrook Hospital, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

About 5:40 p.m. Monday, they were southbound on Old Highway 395 north of California 76 at 60 m.p.h. when they struck the abandoned truck, which was sticking out about three feet into the roadway, the spokeswoman said.

“The truck was definitely a hazard,” she said.

An investigation into the accident and who owned the truck was continuing.
