Local News in Brief : Second Budget Passed

The Carson City Council took a second step in getting its finances in order this week, passing a $1.6-million supplemental budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

A “bare-bones” $25.4-million operating budget based on last year’s expenditures plus an inflation factor of 4% to 5% was passed three weeks ago amid recriminations that the budget proposed in June was padded and included new positions and projects contrary to council and administration directives.

In the supplemental budget, five new positions have been added, including a clerk’s position for a crime analysis unit at the Carson station of the Sheriff’s Department. The bulk of the supplemental budget is a $951,775 reserve fund.

Council members said a third step to the budget process will be required to determine spending priorities for the reserve fund.
