A 27-year-old man was shot to death and his uncle was seriously wounded Saturday when an apparent argument turned violent in front of a Southeast San Diego home, police said.

A suspect was believed to be inside a house in the 2900 block of National Avenue late Saturday, and a San Diego police SWAT team had surrounded it. Other officers attempted to determine who, if anyone, was inside, police spokeswoman Sgt. Anne O’Dell said at a command post half a block from the house and across the street from the Holsum Bakery.

O’Dell identified the dead man as Jose Manuel Suarez, shot in the chest with a shotgun. His uncle, who was not identified, was shot in the legs and abdomen, and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center where he underwent surgery late Saturday and was listed in serious condition.

O’Dell said that confirmed information was still sketchy, but that Suarez apparently got into an argument with an unidentified man soon after he and other relatives arrived at the uncle’s house. O’Dell said the argument took place outside the uncle’s house.
