The theft of $209,000 in deposits to a downtown San Diego bank was reported Wednesday, police said.

The money disappeared from a bank bag that was transported by Brink’s Inc., the armored-truck service for the Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles.

According to San Diego Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson, the bag containing $209,000 in cash was picked up by Brink’s guards Friday from Security Pacific Bank at 3rd Avenue and A Street in San Diego.

The money was taken by armored truck to the Brink’s building at 4506 Federal Blvd. in Los Angeles, where it was stored over the weekend in the company’s vault.

On Monday, the money was taken to the Federal Reserve Bank. On Tuesday, bank officials noticed that the seal on the bag had been tampered with. Inside, bank officials found that $9,000 in $1 bills and $200,000 in $100 bills was missing.

Robinson said the money was stolen sometime between Friday and Tuesday.

The theft is being investigated by the FBI and the Police Department.
