Local News in Brief : Mission Viejo : City Faces Deadline on Registering Voters

Share

The newly formed city of Mission Viejo currently is conducting a bipartisan voter registration drive in an attempt to boost its population figure and increase its share of state tax revenue transfer when it becomes a city March 31.

Once incorporated, the city is eligible to receive a portion of the state Motor Vehicle License Fee, gasoline tax and cigarette tax revenues, on a dollar-per-resident basis, based on population figures.

According to state law, population of new cities is determined by multiplying by three the number of registered voters as of 5 p.m. on incorporation day.

Each new registered voter will count as three additional people in the new city’s population. The city would receive an estimated $39 in revenue for each resident, so each new registered voter represents $117 to the city.

Mission Viejo currently has 34,211 registered voters and an estimated population of 67,310.

Volunteers will be registering voters at Mission Viejo’s shopping centers on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, call (714) 582-9009.
