High school students in the Torrance Unified School District raised nearly $20,000 to benefit victims of muscular dystrophy. Marilyn Commeau, director of student activities at West High, said students in the district’s four high schools collected the money from families, neighbors and friends during a two-week drive.

About 375 students who collected $50 or more were bused to Knotts Berry Farm, where they were rewarded with free rides, lunch and a dance, Commeau said. Other prizes included T-shirts, sweat shirts, mugs and gift certificates.
