Southern Section All-Stars Sweep City in Basketball
The Southern Section senior all-stars swept the City Section all-stars Saturday night in the fifth annual Southern California prep all-star basketball classic at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
The Southern Section boys took a 128-123 victory and the girls blasted the City, 103-68.
The City all-stars took a 9-2 lead early in the first quarter, but the Southern Section battled back to take a 24-22 lead at the end of the quarter on a basket by Simi Valley’s Shawn DeLaittre.
The City all-stars came back to open up a 53-51 halftime lead as Manual Arts teammates Wayne Williams and Andre Boubay each scored eight points.
The Southern Section battled back from a 12-point deficit to take an 88-85 lead at the end of the third quarter on a three-point basket by Simi Valley’s Butch Hawking with four seconds left.
A slam by Santa Monica’s Keith Neal with 15 seconds remaining capped the Southern Section victory.
Santa Barbara’s Paul Johnson led the Southern Section with 20 points. The girls played college rules with 20-minute halves and the boys played under NBA rules.
