Censorship has yielded a shot at professional exposure for Chapman College senior Joel Moffett, lately in the news because the Christian-oriented college in Orange put the kibosh on his plans to include a nude scene in a campus play “The Coloring Box.” The 21-year-old student writer learned Wednesday that the Skylight Theater in North Hollywood will give his play a full, uncut production after Chapman College decided that--despite student protests of censorship--it would not permit the performance of the five-minute nude scene in his play. Skylight artistic director Ronald Muchnick called Moffett last week after seeing news reports about the controversy and asked for a copy of the play, calling it “a very good piece of work.” Muchnick said the students who would have acted in the school production will be invited to join professional performers at an open audition at the Equity Waiver theater for roles in Moffett’s work. Performance dates have not been set.
