Brent Mayne received an unexpected chance to extend his hitting streak to 23 games and did so Saturday night when he came to the plate in the 10th inning.

Mayne’s single drove in a run, but it wasn’t enough as Cal State Fullerton’s rally fell short and the Titans lost to Nevada Las Vegas, 3-2, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game in front of 500 fans Saturday night at Fullerton.

Mayne’s 23-game streak broke the PCAA record set by Fullerton’s Shane Turner in 1985. Mayne’s mark tied the Fullerton record of 23 held by Tom Thomas (1983) and Mike Vanderburg (1982). In those seasons, the Titans played in the Southern California Baseball Assn.

Mayne, a sophomore from Orange Coast College, was 0 for 4 after he grounded to second for the second out of the eighth inning, and his streak appeared to be over.

Fullerton (30-11 overall, 8-3 in PCAA play) held a 1-0 lead going into the ninth. Starter Longo Garcia was an out away from the shutout when pinch-hitter Dave Sturdivant hit a home run to left-center field off a 2-0 pitch. Garcia (7-3) pitched 10 innings but took the loss.

Mike Ross, who had hit a solo home run in the fourth to give Fullerton a 1-0 lead, singled to open the ninth. But Keith Kaub grounded into a double play and Rex Peters flied to right for the final out.

James Martin had a one-out double in the 10th for the Rebels and scored on a bloop single by Gary Forrester. Jim Barbeau later grounded out to score Forrester as Las Vegas (30-12, 9-2) took a 3-1 lead.

Bobby Jones had a two-out single and Greg Mannion walked in the 10th for Fullerton to get Mayne to the plate for a fifth time. His line-drive single up the middle cut the lead to 3-2, but Ross flied out to end the game. Donovan Osborne (6-4) pitched 9 innings for the victory, and Marty Lequerica got the final out for his fifth save.

The teams conclude the three-game series today at 1 at Fullerton.
