American Cyanamid Co. reported a 29% rise to $79.2 million in its first-quarter earnings, up from $61.5 million in the year-ago period. Worldwide sales in the quarter rose 13% to $1.148 billion, the highest quarterly sales in the history of the Wayne, N.J.-based company, compared to $1.014 billion in the like period last year. The firm attributed the results primarily to improved performances in all of Cyanamid’s business groups, continued cost control and the favorable effect of foreign exchange.
