Former White House spokesman Larry Speakes publicly apologized for making up quotes for President Reagan, saying he had wronged Reagan and damaged his own credibility. “To attribute to the President words not uttered by the President is wrong, period,” Speakes said at a “book and author” luncheon hosted by the Washington Post. He did not apologize for telling the truth in his book “Speaking Out” but said: “I do regret that I have overstepped the bounds of propriety in some instances and it is for this that I apologize.” Speakes roused criticism by writing that he made up two quotes for Reagan.
