Local News in Brief : Longer Term for Lawyer

A lawyer who tried to bolt from court after being sentenced to three years in state prison in a fraud case has received an additional eight months in prison for the attempted escape.

Los Angeles attorney J. Bruce Johnson, 41, was sentenced to the additional prison time by Superior Court Judge William Pounders after pleading guilty to a felony charge of attempted escape.

Johnson tried to flee from the court in January after Superior Court Judge Paul Boland, who had just sentenced him to three years in prison, refused to allow him to surrender at the state prison at Chino rather than be processed through the County Jail. Before he could escape, however, bailiffs wrestled him to the ground.

Johnson claimed he was fearful of County Jail because he had received death threats while incarcerated there for 40 days after his arrest.
