Seventeen Salvadoran soldiers died and eight were wounded when their transport truck was destroyed by a remote-controlled rebel mine east of San Salvador, the Defense Ministry reported. It said the mine exploded in Zacatecoloca, the provincial capital of La Paz, 15 miles east of San Salvador. The armed forces press office also said three rebels were killed and three soldiers were wounded in a clash near the town of San Francisco Javier in eastern Usulutan province. Later, the guerrillas’ Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front said on rebel radio that insurgents in the last week killed or wounded 96 government soldiers and damaged two U.S.-made Huey army helicopters.
