Local News in Brief : Santa Anita’s Season Nets $500,000 for Fair
The 91-day Santa Anita horse racing season, which ended on Monday, generated more than $500,000 in revenue through off-track betting for the Ventura County Fairgrounds, fair officials announced this week.
More than $14 million has been wagered at the fairgrounds since Nov. 18, when a giant satellite dish began simulcasting races from the Arcadia track, Fair Manager Jeremy Ferris said. The average daily wager by each fan was about $155, Ferris said.
Under state law, the fairgrounds receives 2% of the total amount wagered at the facility. Adding in revenue from admission prices and concession sales, fair officials have predicted they will reap about $1 million a year from the operation.
The satellite system, which broadcasts year-round from all of Southern California’s race tracks, began simulcasting horse racing on Wednesday from Hollywood Park.
