Jury Votes Death Sentence in Kidnap-Burial Killing

KANKAKEE, Ill. —
A jury Friday sentenced a former handyman to death for the 1987 kidnapping and murder of media heir Stephen B. Small, who was buried alive in a box and suffocated. An appeal is automatic. Daniel Edwards, 31, had demanded a $1-million ransom from Small’s family, which was never paid.
