Relatives of deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos said today they will transfer the body of his mother to the family’s home province for burial later this week, almost six weeks after her death.

The body of Josefa Marcos will be moved Wednesday to Batac in Ilocos Norte province, 240 miles north of Manila, said Marcos’ sister, Fortuna Barba. The family had postponed the burial since Mrs. Marcos’ death May 4 in the hope that her son would be allowed to return from exile in Hawaii.

“Although we have not yet lost hope that (Marcos) may yet be able to return . . . we also cannot escape the stark reality that the dead must be buried,” Barba said.

The date for the funeral has not been set.

Marcos’ 95-year-old mother has now lain in state for 40 days.
