Long Beach : Development Scaled Down
The board of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency has approved a scaled-down version of the $85-million Landmark Square office building project to be constructed downtown. Under the revised plan, the 24-story project, to be located on the block bounded by First Street, Pine Avenue, Ocean Boulevard and Pacific Avenue, will be built without the originally envisioned corporate meeting room on the top level that would have brought it to 31 stories.
“They found that prospective tenants just weren’t as interested (in the meeting room) as they thought they would be,” said Gail Wasil, an administrative analyst for the city’s Community Development Department, speaking of Cushman Investment & Development Corp. which is planning the project.
Also absent from the new plan is any provision for the Long Beach Museum of Art, which had expressed interest in relocating to the new building.
The city Planning Commission is expected to consider the plan June 23. According to Wasil, developers hope to begin construction on the two-year project in December.
